Prominent human rights defender and prisoner of conscience Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja (64) has announced his intention to begin an open-ended hunger strike starting tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28, 2025, to demand that the Danish government and the European Union reveal the truth about his case.
Al-Khawaja was arrested after his home was raided on March 17, 2011, due to his human rights activism. He is serving a life sentence at Jau Central Prison in Bahrain, where he has spent more than 14 and a half years behind bars as of October 2025.
Al-Khawaja stated that this hunger strike comes as a protest against the continued disregard of his case and as a demand for acknowledgment of what happened to him, emphasizing that recognizing the truth of his case is also a recognition of the reality of many other human rights cases in Bahrain.
