Grief Under Surveillance… Al-Amal Center Monitors Summonses Following the Mourning of Sailor Abdullah

Al-Amal Center for Human Rights and Justice expresses deep concern over the unprecedented wave of summonses and security raids witnessed in Bahrain in recent days, which appear to be linked to the mourning ceremonies for the late sailor, Abdullah Hassan Yousif, which concluded yesterday.

According to verified information received by the Center from families and individuals in the area, several participants in the mourning gathering were summoned through phone calls from security authorities, while others were subjected to dawn house raids without the presentation of judicial warrants. This constitutes a clear violation of constitutional guarantees and the provisions of international human rights law, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Bahrain.

The Center affirms that associating security measures with humanitarian mourning ceremonies infringes upon individuals’ right to express grief and sympathy, representing a serious restriction on the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, both of which are fundamental and inviolable.

Al-Amal Center for Human Rights and Justice calls upon the Bahraini authorities to:

  1. Immediately halt all raids and summonses related to the mourning ceremonies and release those detained.

  2. Ensure respect for freedom of expression and human grief, and prevent any targeting related to participation in social or religious gatherings.

  3. Launch an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of sailor Abdullah Hassan Yousif, ensuring truth and justice.

  4. Allow independent human rights organizations to freely monitor and document these cases without restriction.

The Center emphasizes that addressing humanitarian matters through security measures only deepens wounds and undermines stability. Respecting citizens’ dignity and their right to express sorrow is the true path toward building trust and strengthening national unity.
