Al-Amal Center for Human Rights and Justice expresses its deep concern over the Bahraini authorities’ arrest of Waad Society leader, Mr. Ibrahim Sharif, at Bahrain International Airport upon his return from participating in the Arab National Conference held in Beirut, Lebanon.
The arrest of Mr. Ibrahim Sharif, known for his peaceful stances and calls for political reform, constitutes a blatant violation of his rights to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as freedom of movement and participation in peaceful intellectual and political events.
The Center believes that this measure reflects the continued policy of tightening restrictions on national opposition voices and raises serious concerns about the shrinking space for public freedoms in Bahrain.
Al-Amal Center for Human Rights and Justice calls on the Bahraini authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Mr. Ibrahim Sharif, to respect their international obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and to ensure a safe environment for peaceful political and intellectual activity without fear of retaliation or detention.
