Bahrain: Hussaini Reciter Abdullah Al-Matrook Arrested in Connection with Commemorations of the Martyrdom of Lady Fatima Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her)

On Monday, 26 October 2026, security forces arrested Hussaini reciter Abdullah Al-Matrook following a raid on his home. The arrest reportedly took place in connection with his participation in commemorations marking the martyrdom of Lady Fatima Al-Zahra (peace be upon her).

This arrest raises serious concerns regarding freedom of religious practice and the right of individuals to express their beliefs and observe religious occasions without facing harassment, prosecution, or arrest for peacefully exercising these rights.

The reported targeting of an individual in connection with participation in a religious commemoration warrants the attention of relevant human rights organisations. It is essential to establish the circumstances surrounding the arrest and its legal basis, and to ensure that the detainee’s rights are respected, including the right to be informed of the reasons for his detention, to have access to legal counsel, and to be protected against arbitrary measures, in accordance with applicable legal safeguards and relevant international human rights standards.

Accordingly, we call on human rights organisations and institutions to:

  1. Follow up on the case of Hussaini reciter Abdullah Al-Matrook and verify the circumstances of his arrest and his place of detention.

  2. Call for disclosure of the legal grounds for his arrest and ensure that all his legal rights are upheld.

  3. Monitor any potential violations of freedom of religion or belief, freedom of expression, and the right to peaceful assembly.

  4. Urge the relevant authorities to respect the right to practise religious rituals peacefully and to ensure that security measures are not used to restrict these rights without a legitimate legal basis.

Protecting freedom of religion or belief, preserving human dignity, and upholding the guarantees of a fair trial are fundamental principles of human rights. This case therefore warrants serious attention, with due regard for the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of all individuals.

Freedom for Abdullah Al-Matrook, and full protection of his human and legal rights.
